Position Summary: Vice President, Patient Advocacy
 
BioMarin is seeking a Vice President, Patient Advocacy to lead the company’s global patient advocacy function and ensure patient perspectives inform key decisions across the organization.
 
Reporting to the Chief Corporate Affairs & Patient Advocacy Officer, this individual will lead an international team of more than 10 patient advocacy professionals and work with the team to set the strategy for how BioMarin engages with patient communities across the portfólio. This leader will build trusted relationships with advocacy organizations, ensure patient insights are integrated across the product lifecycle, and serve as a senior advisor to internal leaders on community priorities, emerging issues and engagement strategies.
 
 
This role requires both external credibility and the ability to influence enterprise decisions internally. The ideal candidate brings significant patient advocacy experience, strong leadership capability, and sound judgment in complex, highly regulated environments. Experience in rare disease is strongly preferred.
 
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead BioMarin’s patient advocacy strategy across the portfolio
  • Build and sustain trusted relationships with patient advocacy organizations, community leaders and other external stakeholders
  • Ensure patient insights are integrated into decision-making across research, clinical development, market access, commercialization and long-term support
  • Lead, develop and scale an international team of more than 10 patient advocacy professionals
  • Partner cross-functionally to anticipate issues, address community concerns and align engagement strategies with company priorities
  • Co-create initiatives with patient groups that advance shared goals, including disease awareness, earlier diagnosis and access to innovation
  • Oversee advocacy budgets, resource planning and key investment decisions
  • Provide counsel to the company’s grantmaking review process to support fair, compliant and effective decision-making
  • Represent BioMarin at conferences, advocacy events and external forums
  • Ensure all patient engagement activities comply with applicable laws, regulations and internal policies
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare or consulting environments
  • Significant experience in patient advocacy or closely related external engagement roles
  • Strong preference for experience in rare disease and/or biopharma
  • Proven success leading strategy in a complex, international and highly regulated environment
  • Significant people leadership experience, including in matrixed organizations
  • Deep understanding of healthcare systems, reimbursement and access, and regulatory environments
  • Strong judgment, executive presence and ability to influence senior stakeholders
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills

Location
Role is based at BioMarin's San Rafael, CA HQ.  Employees are expected to work onsite at least 2 days per week.  Additional travel dependent on business need.
